Chess is Big

| Saturday 9th March, 2024

I just noticed how much a single game can affect your percentile and rank worldwide on chess.com. It made me realise how many people must be on there playing.

I thought I’d measure it… how would my rating change from a single win (or loss)?

Well… before my game I was ranked 4,157,402 in the world for rapid chess (just below the 43rd percentile).

After the game? Well, I lost, and my rank became 4,226,579.

That’s 69,177 places lost due to a single game.

Wow. Chess really is big.
