Small Web Search

| Saturday 11th November, 2023

With Google returning worse and worse results every day (in addition to heinous crimes against privacy), I have taken a big step. I’ve replaced Google as my default search engine (when I type in the top bar of Brave browser), and have replaced it with Wiby [wiby.me].

Wiby is a small-web search engine, and while it will return results from far fewer sites, the ones it finds are more likely to be interesting. (I have also submitted this site for consideration!)

To update the default browser in Brave I did the following:

  1. Go to: brave://settings/searchEngines
  2. Next to “Site Search”, click “Add” (I wasn’t sure this was the right button because it didn’t seem like I wanted to do what “site search” was describing… but it is, indeed, correct).
  3. Fill the pop-up box with “Wiby” as the search engine, “:w” as the shortcut and “https://wiby.me/?q=%s” as the URL.
  4. Click the three dots to the right of the new entry and choose “Make Default”

Hey, presto! You’re using a small-web search engine by default.
