What’s In A Domain

| Tuesday 5th December, 2023

[editor’s note 5th March 2024: the domain redirect I talk about below is no longer active – after three months of successful redirection I am now assuming no-one will go to the old address]

It’s very nice to have your name as a domain name, and indeed, I have georgemccandless.com.

However, it’s a bit of a epic undertaking to type it out in full, correctly, first time. (Especially for someone who doesn’t type the name several times a week).

And so I’ve now chosen to minimise my domain name too.

It’s now gamc.uk

Yes, that’s better! I can actually advertise my URL (for instance on the Saturday Sessions) and people will be able to type it.

It does mean, however, that the £48 I just spent on 100 business cards is wasted. But then again, I guess I am in a state of constant flux right now and waste is likely to occur. I’m not going to sweat it.

A new set of cards are on their way with the new email and web address.

And a bit of coding over at georgemccandless.com so that it redirects nicely.

(Example if you try to view this blog over there: https://georgemccandless.com/whats-in-a-domain/)

To achieve this, I wiped the files from my webspace, then uploaded a .htaccess file containing the following:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /

# Redirect all requests not pointing to an actual file or directory
# to a single PHP file, e.g., index.php
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d

# Rewrite all those requests to index.php
RewriteRule ^ index.php [QSA,L]

This essentially directs any page requested to load index.php.

Then the index.php file looks like this:

<?php
$newURI = "https://gamc.uk" . $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'];
?>

<head>
<title>Site Moved</title>
</head>
<body>
<center><h1>This site has moved...</h1>
<p>Please update your bookmarks, then head over to:</p>
<a href="<?php echo $newURI; ?>"><?php echo $newURI; ?></a>
</center>
</body>

Pretty simple stuff, but neat to be able to knock it up like that. I’m glad I have a tech background.
